Cotton Macrame Rope & Cord - 1.5mm to 10mm


Macrame cord is a versatile and inexpensive craft material that can be used for a variety of projects, from plant hangers to wall hangings. It is a type of cordage specifically designed for use in macrame projects.

Macrame is typically made from natural fibres such as cotton or jute, though synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon can also be used. Macrame cord is sold in a variety of thicknesses on the Harry & Wilma website. We stock varieties between 2mm and 6mm, with 3mm being the most popular.

What is macrame?

Macrame is a form of textile-making that uses knotting techniques to create intricate designs. It first gained popularity in the 13th century, when Arabic weavers began using knotting techniques to decorate clothing and other textiles. 

From there, it spread to Europe, where it was used to adorn everything from curtains to tapestries. Macrame fell out of fashion in the early 20th century but experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 1970s. Today, it is once again enjoying a moment in the spotlight.

There are a few reasons for macrame's current popularity. First, there is the fact that many people are now looking for ways to add handmade touches to their homes. In a world where so much is mass-produced, handmade items have become increasingly coveted. Additionally, macrame is relatively inexpensive and easy to learn, which makes it a great option for beginner crafters. And finally, many people are drawn to macrame because of its minimalist aesthetic; its simple designs can add a touch of understated elegance to any space.

Do you do custom macrame length cuttings?

While we do not have the option for custom length cuttings, we do have 50m macrame rolls and 100m macrame roll options available for most of the colours on our website.  

Is it easy to learn macrame?

The most basic macrame knots are the square knot, half hitch knot, and spiral knot. Once you know how to tie these knots, you can start creating simple macrame projects like plant hangers and wall hangings.

If you want to create more complex macrame pieces, you'll need to learn some more advanced knots and techniques. These include the lark's head knot, double half hitch knot, and wrapped loop knot. With these knots, you can make more intricate macrame projects like purses, bags, and rugs.

So, is macrame easy to learn? The answer is yes and no. If you're just looking to make simple macrame projects like plant hangers and wall hangings, then you can probably pick it up fairly quickly. But if you want to create more complex pieces, it will take some time and practice to master the required knots and techniques. So if you're thinking about learning macrame, be prepared to put in some effort—but the results will be worth it!

What can you do with macrame?
